It gives us great pleasure and honour to bring the world’s most prolific scientific event on maritime, port economics and management related research to Mombasa, Kenya – and in the African Continent for the first time. During its 25 years of existence, the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) conference has never been held in Africa, which makes the 2018 conference an important and unique opportunity to put Africa on the IAME conference map and expand the Association’s reach to the African continent. Undoubtedly this elevates IAME’s status to a truly global scientific organization.
We hope that delegates will enjoy their stay at the city of Mombasa, which is also a host to the leading East-African Port, the Port of Mombasa and a Maritime City within a fast developing hinterland region. The city is well linked by air and has connections to all world regions.
The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the lead hosting partner has also participated and played leading roles in other maritime Associations; the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH), Pan-African Association for Ports Cooperation (PAPC), Association of Women in the Maritime Sector in Eastern and Southern Africa (WOMESA) and now prides to bring the world’s elite researchers on ports and shipping economics and management to Africa through IAME. The above partly contributed to the choice of KPA as the IAME conference lead host, however, it would not have been possible without great support of Vrije Universiteit Brussel, (VUB) the international co-host, local universities and partnering institutions through the local organizing committee.
Later this year, Kenya is also organizing a major international maritime event – The Sustainable Blue Economy Conference, 26th – 28th November 2018 in Nairobi Kenya, and we will be happy to have you back in Kenya to participate in this important conference.
On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee I take this opportunity to welcome you – once again and as we say in Kiswahili ‘KARIBU’ Kenya – Welcome to Kenya!
